Transport bikes are taking the streets by storm. There was a time when you could only see them in Amsterdam but now they are all over the country. Modern transport bikes are a far cry from the heavy and cumbersome machines of the past. Most people buy them to carry their children, but you can also use them to do your shopping. The Dutch cycle club Fietsersbond has tested ten transport bikes.

Nihola Family Bike € 2.050,-

The Nihola is the only bike in our test with a storage area that is part of the whole frame. On normal transport bikes you have to swivel the whole load when you steer. But on the Nihola the front wheels turn independently, the same way as a car’s. The great benefit of this is that it makes the bike comfortable to ride. That was also the clear result of our test: the Nihola transport bike is the fastest and the most comfortable to steer and ride.

 

The independently pivoting wheels have the obvious drawback of reducing the load area at the front. The Nihola design cleverly counters this disadvantage with the one-sided wheel supports and the rounded storage barrel. The loss of space in comparison to other transport bikes is therefore relatively small. Furthermore, the Nihola is very well built, with a good-looking frame, strong components, good brakes and a nice rain hood.
